Chornobyl Zone
The Atey Battalion carries out missions not only on the most intense frontlines in eastern Ukraine, but also at strategically critical locations. One of these key areas is ensuring the security of the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone and protecting Ukraine’s northern border.
Since the full-scale invasion, the significance of this territory has changed dramatically. What was once primarily viewed as an area of environmental control is now a critical component of the country’s defense system. Control over this zone means control over access routes to the capital, key logistical corridors, and vital infrastructure.
Battalion units conduct continuous patrols, surveillance, and territory control. Their tasks include detecting potential threats, responding to changes in the operational environment, and maintaining stability within their area of responsibility. Service conditions here have their own unique challenges - a combination of military risks and difficult terrain, where every movement requires precision and attention.
Work in the Chornobyl Zone is not a “quiet assignment,” as it might seem from the outside. It requires constant readiness for any possible development. Simply put, when everything appears calm, it usually means the job is being done correctly.
In addition to physical presence, technical capability plays a critical role. Surveillance systems, unmanned platforms, communications, and mobility allow the unit to effectively monitor large areas and respond quickly to emerging threats.
